HARE CATCHES THE HOUND

Here, instead of being chased by the hound, the hare holds him slung across her shoulders as the shepherd is often shown carrying a sheep to safety. The Breviary on this page commemorates St Airy, Bishop of Verdun, for his pastoral qualities in looking after his flock like a good shepherd. Given the adversarial relations of the hound and the hare, however, the hare may here be imagined as carrying him off for supper.
