MONK/SNAIL GROTESQUE HOLDS FORTH

This figure represents a didactic pedagogue, tonsured monk’s head and the black habit of the Benedictine order, with hair spilling out at his waist from the nether parts of a snail’s carapace. He indicates the text of the Lesson just above his head, “Lo! perceive the fruit of the spiritual sense hidden in the letter (if you want to get to the gratifying kernel of the message).”
